More Than Soccer...

Think your little tike is too young to become the next Picasso, Mozart, Mia Hamm, or Tiger Woods? While the 'masterpiece' your child painted for you as a birthday gift will probably always be more valuable to you than anyone else, your toddler or preschooler has the potential to learn more than you think from that art, music, sports, or dance class. The classes that you sign him/her up for today will set the stage for a lifetime of learning.

Almost any class that your child takes will teach him/her to follow directions, pay attention, and get along with peers. Not sure what else to expect out of a class? See the list below for examples of how much your child can learn.

Sports Classes

• Gross motor skills (kicking, running, etc.)
• Visual spatial skills (tracking a ball with his/her eyes and being able to catch/kick/hit it)

Music Classes

• Rhyming - A pre-reading skill
• Rhythm - A pre-math skill
• Instruments - Pre-science concepts (how sound is made, high vs. low sounds, long vs. short sounds)
• Fine motor skills
• Gross motor skills

Art Classes

• Fine motor skills - Pre-writing skills
• Textures and colors - increase vocabulary ('bumpy', 'smooth', 'bright'), sensory skills
• Color mixing (yellow and blue make green) - Pre-science concepts

Dance Classes

• Gross Motor skills
• Fine Motor skills
• Rhythm: a pre-math skill

Not sure what type of class to sign your tot up for? Choose a class that interests your child, but remember that the quality of the class is as important as the subject.
